:star: $19- Start Drawing: Techniques for Pencil Portraits :star:

Seven years ago when I was struggling to learn portraiture, I remember saying to my mom, "When I "get" this, I'm going to teach everyone how to do it!"  So here we are, seven years later and I'm ready to share the knowledge I've discovered!

After years of studying with professional portrait artists, by reading tons of books on how to draw the face, and by studying the works of master artists such as Sargent, Bouguereau, and Vanderpoel, I'm ready to share the most helpful information I've learned with you all!

Through videos, images, and easy to follow project steps you will learn how to make a great portrait. In my skillshare class, I will walk you through materials to use as well as how to pick the best reference photos. Then we will start sketching and I will teach you how to accurately draw the portrait using gesture and correct proportions. I will then share the knowledge I've learned from professionals on the planes of the face and light and shade. Blending and shading will of course be covered. I will also walk you through how to draw the eyes, nose, mouth, and hair and all the common mistakes you should try to avoid when drawing these features. Finally, I will teach you how to make your drawing really special with finishing touches.

All along the way I will be sharing tips, tricks, and techniques I've learned. This class will be packed with information and will help bring your drawing skills to the next level! This class will be great for the beginner as well as the intermediate or advanced student.

In this class I will share knowledge about portraiture in general and it can really be applied with any medium! So if your favorite medium is say charcoal, digital paint, pastels, watercolors, etc. this class will still have tons of useful information you can apply to your portrait work.

This is a self-paced online class. So once you purchase you will have lifetime access to all the videos and content, for only $19! You can use this class to get started on your own pencil portrait. Then share your project in the student gallery for feedback from classmates all over the world. As this is a lifetime class, I can not guarantee I can be hands on with every student through skillshare. However, I will be active in the classroom providing feedback whenever I am able. You can also feel free to contact me through deviantart if you would like a critique on your work.

If you have any questions about the class, please don’t hesitate to ask! Hope to see you there! :D

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are so many great artworks going up in the STUDENT PROJECTS section of the class. So cool to see! If you joined the class and would like feedback on your work or from me, make sure to upload there. I would love to see! (also, send me a link so I can put it here) :D

i suck in drawing pretty much anything (i'm better at digital drawing but freehand? oh hell no) so i'm curious about this class. i really hope i'll be able to draw a decent portrait after this class, something that resembles a human face lol.so my question is, will i be able to follow all the steps and tips etc etc?

So I don't talk too too much about freehand drawing in this- because I think that comes through lots and lots of practice.
I do share tips on how to do a freehand sketch though. Like working on a scrap piece of paper first- so you are free to make mistakes!! (almost like CTRL Z when working digitally, but not quite) ;) Then you trace your rough sketch to nicer paper when you are ready.

I will also teach you measuring tricks so that drawing the initial portrait sketch is easier and more accurate. Additionally, you will get to watch me sketching freehand and I will explain what I am thinking about and doing the whole time, so you should be able to pick up some drawing tips there.

Then I walk you through each feature- eyes, nose, mouth etc. And I will share all the most helpful things I've learned over the past several years.

I think you will be able to discover some new things that will help you draw portraits better. And there is a 25% sale going on now! :D Would love to see you there :)

I think I will^^ but one quick question: If I learn to draw realism is it possible that I will be able to draw anything I see and study?

Because I've heard that if you learn realism/portraits you can pretty much draw anything... Is that true?

hmm tough question and I can only answer from my personal experience.
Learning to draw the portrait has helped me get better at drawing, on the whole, in general. I can take things I've learned to drawing I do of landscapes, still life, etc.
That said- to me it's all still a challenge! Like sometimes I still find it difficult to draw things like clothes- sometimes the portrait will look a lot better than the clothes I draw on them for example. That's because I have so much more practice drawing portraits and not as much drawing clothes. It comes down to practice I think.

I've actually found that drawing things like still lives makes me better at portraits surprisingly! Because I'm able to take something basic, and apply the things I learn there to something more complex. For instance, I can look at a ball in a still life set up & learn how light and shade falls on that simple ball. Then I can bring it to my portrait work, when I'm trying to draw the ball of the nose. :)

I think any type of art will help any other type though. So drawing portraits will for sure sharpen your skills! :D And so will still life drawing, figure drawing, painting landscapes, etc.
