Professor Snape by gabbyd70 Professor Snape by gabbyd70
It's Snape!
I started this drawing about 2 months ago, finally I've finished it. :D I'm actually seeing the new movie at 12 tonight, because I am a dedicated fan ;) lol

I drew this on 11" by 14" vellum bristol paper and I used 3H and 4B lead. I also used tissues and q-tips for blending and a kneaded eraser and pencil eraser for the highlighted areas. Materials- [link]

**EDIT
Just saw the movie...it was awesome :D :D

Oh and do you think it's best to make a start on a few portraits or focus on one at a time?

It depends. Eventually you'll find you have a lot of open projects that are unfinished. That's the case for me right now. But I think it's actually better for me to only work on 1-3 things at once. Otherwise I personally get overwhelmed. But at the same time, breaking from one thing to work on another can be refreshing. Try either way! Figure out what works for you :)

I drew someone I used to know in colour - the picture I drew means a lot. I think I'll improve over the months. Is 1-2 portrait a day a good idea? Maybe I could do 2 versions (with hair similar/close to the photo) and then change the hair to a different colour and see how it goes? =]

I think it's good to experiment in pieces. On one piece I did the face in a light pink (and another did it darker and used a rubber for some highlights. It suits both. It's amazing how different it looks :3

How much would three portrait drawings of mine be worth? £4.99 - £7? If the frames cost me £4.99 and got £10 for three - I'm only making £5 ish. Thoughts?

How do I get my portraits as close as possible to the photo?

Well, it will take a lot of hard work. My mom told me once, you have to draw 100 portraits before you can get a likeness. And it's true! It's tough!!

When I was younger I also wanted to copy the photos exactly. And to do that, you have to measure proportions and look for shapes. Draw shapes of value and try and copy them. If something is dark, make it the same degree of dark. If something is light make it light. If a shape looks like a pinched triangle with a little squiggle at the end, then draw it like a pinched triangle with a squiggle at the end.

I don't really work in this way now, but that's how I worked when I made this.

I'll take your advice - do you prefer colour or black and white portraits? I'm experimenting with colour right now and I prefer it (idk why). It's okay to have a preference right? Thank you for the support. :)

I do prefer working with colour but maybe a black and white one would make a change... seems like I get bored of black and white and then I want colour... and vice versa. :p Your snape drawing was awesome :3

I search artists pencil portraits to improve my technique that art school never taught me!  You are one of the sources. This is a great pic. I've been called Snape more than once

Loving this so much , Still on a bit of a Harry Potter trip after watching five of them over the holidays. Alan Rickman's voice is the best, I can just hear him (Mizterr....Potterr)  when I look at this. It captures the sadness & disdain for himself I always felt Snape had. Its beautiful :worship:
